Special Committees: 9-5 Networking group

Last month’s speaker, SueLynn, gave us fascinating insights into governing, legislative, and administrative viewpoints; focus and goal-oriented organizations; possibilities of private philanthropy; and framing issues. It is so much more interesting to hear directly from an
insider. This month’s meeting will give us the same sort of opportunity. Luz Corcuera, director of Healthy Start in Manatee County and a member of the Latino Coalition,
is our guest speaker. Luz has received many awards for the program which works with minority women and children, from pregnancy onward. Any gifts (absolutely optional) you would like to bring for Healthy Start would be welcome. Both new and gently used infant clothing, toiletries, toys, and books are always welcome. We meet at Stacey’s Buffet
Restaurant, 4848 14th Street West (752-3666) on Tuesday, March 13, 6 pm. Please join us.

Any questions? Call Francine at 778-3444 or Vicki at 753-9741.

The Bush administration has broken its promise to make a decision on the morning-after pill by September 1.

American women have waited more than two years for President Bush's FDA to decide whether women can purchase the morning-after pill (a form of birth control that prevents unintended pregnancy after sex) over the counter.

How much longer do we have to wait?

The Bush administration explicitly promised the U.S. Senate that the FDA would stop dragging its feet and issue a decision by September 1.  Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) secured this written promise last month as part of an agreement to lift their hold on the nomination of Lester Crawford to the post of FDA commissioner.  On Friday, August 26, Bush's FDA broke its promise by announcing that it would delay the decision indefinitely.

By constantly delaying the decision, Bush's FDA is allowing a small number of anti-birth control zealots to prescribe policy for women's birth-control options.

Today we're launching a campaign to get an answer from the FDA on the morning-after pill.   FDA officials know that the majority of its own doctors and scientists favor over-the-counter access to the morning-after pill, but they're hoping that the American public isn't paying attention. Don't let the Bush administration sacrifice an effective and underutilized birth-control option to the radical agenda of the anti-choice right.

Send a letter to Bush's FDA.  Ask the FDA to keep its word and make the right decision immediately.  Click here to become part of America's Choice Action Network and make a difference.s
